Marble sculptures by Fabio Viale. The idea of sculpting styrofoam into a classical bust of The Virgin Mary is fascinating on its own, but believe it or not, this sculpture (above) is carved out of white marble and is sculpted to look like styrofoam. The exact inverse of this is entirely understandable. I can imagine saying to myself, "I can't get white marble, so let's just try styrofoam." However, I find there is a profound modesty in masking the identity of such a valuable material in such a beautiful way. Unfortunately, marble sculptures are generally thought of as a medium of the past, but Fabio Viale has found new life and new relevance in this beautiful art form.
